Tool 2.1 PICO Concepts for Developing a Purpose Statement

17

INSTRUCTIONS: Use this worksheet to explore concepts of interest for your EBP work. Organize using the PICO elements. Begin by identifying a goal or outcome first. Identify potential interventions last; interventions may evolve after reading the evidence. Use all PICO elements to write a purpose statement in one to two sentences. Use PICO elements to identify potential keywords related to the purpose statement.

Tool 2.2 PICO Elements for a Purpose Statement and Evidence Search

18

INSTRUCTIONS: Use this worksheet to develop a purpose statement or question. Describe each PICO element addressing the topic of interest. Identify the outcome before considering interventions; interventions may evolve after reading the evidence. Write a purpose statement and determine the kind of question. Use Table 2.1 to identify study designs most likely to answer this question. List related concepts, inclusion and exclusion criteria, and keywords or concepts for organizing evidence.

Step 1: Define elements or clinical question using PICO:

P = Patients or population to target:

Problem or condition to address:

Pilot area (e.g., unit/clinic):

I = Intervention (assessment or treatment):

C = Comparison:

O = Outcomes:

T = Time frame (optional):

Step 2: Purpose statement:

Step 3: Determine what your question is about (circle one):

Therapy

Diagnosis

Etiology

Prognosis

Meaning

Step 4: Identify study types that best address your question (circle one or more):

Experimental studies

Observational studies

Qualitative studies

Systematic review or meta-analysis

Case reports

Other

Step 5: List the main terms and synonyms for your purpose statement. Typical number of concepts per question is two to three.

Concept 1:

Concept 2:

Concept 3:

Step 6: List inclusion and exclusion criteria:

Step 7: Keywords or concepts for organizing literature:

Topic I decided to pick the topic unsafe staffing levels and its impact on patient safety. During the pandemic shortages of staffing was a main concern for nurses.

this is the topic you selected and identified in your unit 1 discussion).  After selecting a topic from the provided list, you will develop a PICOT question around your topic. Then, you will discuss the selected topic problem and significance of the problem, as well as your search strategy in locating three research articles that align to your selected topic.

For this assignment, be sure to include the following assignment criteria in your paper:

1. Discuss your selected evidence-based practice problem/topic.

2. Discuss the significance of the selected evidence-based practice problem.

3. Support your discussion in terms of statistics and evidence-based outcomes.

4. Describe your PICOT question created around the selected evidence-based practice problem.

5. Included the individual PICOT components, as well as a combine PICOT question, in sentence format.

6. Identify the three articles you selected that address the problem which is the focus of your PICOT question.

7. Describe the search strategy you used to locate these three articles, including terms used when search, the research databases, and how you refined your search to select the three articles.

8. Provide a conclusion to summarize your findings.
